Mastering and mixing tutorials Part 1


In this studio session, watch DubVision walk into the 789ten studio once again and create the most in depth tutorial we have seen from them yet. After a 2 hour + session, they left us with the progressive house banger you hear in the trailer.
This studio session provides a close up look into DubVision’s musical decision making process on mixing, arranging, composition, sound selection and sound manipulation.
After countless releases on the top labels in dance music, the name DubVision has become synonymous with Progressive House. Their productions have a consistent standard of extremely high quality and phenomenal songwriting. With millions upon millions of plays on well-known tracks such as “I Found Your Heart”, “Hollow”, and “Satellites”, there is so much to learn from these guys; not to mention, they are a blast to hang out with in the studio.

Jason be using Ableton during the calls, but anything he shows can easily be applied to any other program (Logic, FL Studio, Cubase, etc.).You can use any DAW you’d like! We wouldn’t recommend switching your platform just for this course.
Common plug-ins Jason will be using: Spire, Massive, Sylenth1, Fab-filter, Cytomic Glue Compressor, Dada Life Sausage Fattener, and Nicky Romero’s Kickstart plugin. If you don’t have all of these, that’s alright, there are always alternatives. The minimum requirements are that you have a powerful enough system that can hold your DAW, Sylenth1, and Nicky Romero Kickstart.

Mixing in general I started off by listening to the drums first and then I flexed the time on the tracks that are needed to be in time. After that I started placing the tracks into summing stacks because I can place plugins to tighten the sound on the stack itself in the later stage. I then add a gain plugin on all of the tracks with mono on. Gain settings on the instruments are -4.8  on the drums and strings, -8.2 on the guitars and -2.7 on the second lead vocals. After that, I added noise gate on some of the tracks (Except the bass, strings and midi) to get rid of some of the bleeds.
