Mic-ing The Drums & Experiment 2 ( Other Groups )
LI TONG'S GROUP - Jazz Drum Mic-ing
XY technique on the overheads, the bass drum mic (AKG P2)
They changed the overheads to the AB technique
XY
- They tried the XY in cardioid, the drums had a tight and centred sound. Snare and Toms are more defined than the cymbals.
- They then tried the same XY technique with Hypercardioid, the snare drums came in spicky and had a loss of low frequency.
- Next, they change it to XY with a Wide Cardioid setting, it sounded more balanced and less spicky.
- They changed from XY to stereo spread to find out the difference between
AB
- It sounded more blended and has a good stereo spread of the overall drums than the XY.
- It has a good stereo spread but it's not a good jazz setting as it needed to be tighter and less blended.
Conclusion
They realised that using a small diaphragm mic the (AKG C451) stereo pair is better, as they have faster transient than the large diaphragm mics, rejects sounds from outside the polar patterns and receives bleeds that are smoother.
I've done my own recordings of the drums that have taken place in the studio and in the control room. Both recordings are done with the AB technique.
