SENNHEISER MD 421 II  - Cost $379.95 made in Germany

Overall

  • Cardioid Polar Pattern

    • Dynamic Microphone - Does not require 48V Phantom Power to operate however the presence of 48V Phantom Power should not adversely affect the operation of the MD 421-II.

    • Frequency Response - 30Hz to 17,000Hz (live engineers, use it as default for saxophones and trumpets, and it is paired well with the SM 57 for Guitar Cabs )

    • Effective feedback rejection

    • Clear sound reproduction

    • 5 Position Bass Control - S(cuts the low end by approximately 6dB below 500 Hz) to M
What is the maximum Sound Pressure Level (SPL) for the MD 421-II?
It is a common saying that dynamic microphones just have no maximum SPL, but for every day use of dynamic microphones you will not find gain limitations. At SPL levels above 160 dB some mechanical problems might occur (for example the voice coil might crash onto the magnet) but these SPL levels are very hard to find in real world.

    Reviews

    The Good
    • Great for voice work and studio use
    • Works really well in loud situations
    • Its versatility - Capture low ends pretty well like the floor tom and works great on guitar amps
    • It is being marketed as a drum mic but many found that it works great with loud male singers of rock, rap and metal.
      The Bad
      • Clip on the microphone is flimsy not a very good mounting system
      • Pricey for a dynamic mic
      • Gets in the way when close miking the snare drum because of its size
*If you are planning on recording vocals mostly for rock music and similar musical styles, or if you're looking for a versatile high SPL dynamic mic for recording, then get the Sennheiser MD421.

Frequency response - The dependence on signal frequency of the output–input ratio of an amplifier or other device.

        SPL - Threshold of hearing
