Studio Composition Part 1

Studio Composition Part 1 Noise (time: 2’00 minutes) Explain the statement that “‘noise’ is a complex and ambiguous social category that is constantly being renegotiated” (up to 200 words): Noise is a complex ambiguous social category that is constantly being renegotiated because of how broad the term ‘noise’ can be from person to person. The reason why it is broad is  because a noise can be something irritating for some, but it also can be a great use or be labelled as music for someone else. For instance, if a person is trying to turn up the music to drown out a car alarm, it can be music to that person but that music could be something irritating for another person, with that it creates a ripple effect and as what Michel Serres a French philosopher says, noise is like a parasite it is inevitable. Noise like static and white noise could also be a distraction for some but It could be great use when a music producer decides to use those ‘noise’ as astatic creativity and inco...

Audio Post Production & Mastering 2

Audio Post Production & Mastering 2 Assignment 2 Report   The project I was given was to mix and master a given track. For the mixing process, I first loaded the wav files into Logic and was given the choice of using the midi files but chose not to. After listening to the tracks thoroughly, I started to arrange the tracks by instruments and place them into a summing stack. For example, drums, guitar, keys, vocals and backing vocals. Afterwards, I added a -6 gain on every channel strip and then began working on the drums first. For kick 1 and 2, I added the eq and compression with the same settings. For kick 3 which is the digital kick I added a tape saturation to not make it sound so digitalise, a compressor with a 2:1:1 ratio and a bus with a limiter on it. The snares, I added eq and compression with similar settings and for the digital snare I added tape saturation and eq. The hi-hats and the overheads have eq and compressor added to it. The digital hi-hat I added a tape satu...

Audio Post Production & Mastering 1

Audio Post Production & Mastering  Assignment 1 Report For this post production project, I am given a 1-minute video advertisement to find the Foley, sound effects and music for the video. This video is made for the purposes of advertising an Italian restaurant and the delicacy they serve. The video also showcases fresh ingredients being chopped and washed in  the chef’s kitchen. Furthermore, I had a basic insight on how the sound and music is going to be because  the original audio was attached to the video. However, this does not change the difficulty of searching for the suitable sound for each ingredient in the video. Here is my process on how it all went down. Firstly, once I got the video and load it up on Logic, I started to skim through the video and audio to get the whole picture. Then, I started to write out the timeline for the video. The timeline helped me to list down the important parts that I wanted to highlight with its own individual sound in the vide...

Applied Sound Design

Applied Sound Design Commentary There are many ways for a brand to standout. What makes each brand different from the rest is their sonic branding. For this project I had to create a sonic logo that represents Sunway University and also three renditions that are based on the sonic logo which is the sting, bed and a 30 second pop song. I first started the project by going through Sunway University’s brand key words and their values. The process of creating a sonic logo is done by studying and experimenting with different instruments trying to place meaning behind the chosen key words and values that represented Sunway University. The final instrument choice was using the Steinway piano as the main melodious element for Sunway University’s sonic logo. The reason why I chose the piano is because I want to embody Sunway University’s image where it is a private university with values of integrity and professionalism similarly to the Steinway piano where it sounds grand, grounded and filled ...
